Odia literature (Oriya Literature) is the literature written in the Odia language and predominantly originates in the Indian state of Odisha. The present state of Odisha was formed in 1936. The modern Odia language is formed mostly from Pali words with significant Sanskrit influence.
The earliest records of Middle Indo-Aryan found in several parts of the Indian sub-continent are also found in Orissa. These are the eleven rook edicts of Emperor Asoka of the 3rd century B. C. together with hie two special Kalinga edited, inscribed on the Dhauli hill near Bhubaneswar in Puri district and Jaugada hill on the bank of the Rusikulya near Purushotampur in Ganjam district. Though the subject matter of the Ediote in same is in both places, the wording is not exactly identical, e. g. whereas *Budha’ ga is used in the Dhauli Edict No. 4 ‘Thera’ at is seemingly substituted in its place in the Jaugada edict, On the whole, the language of the Orissa version of the Asokan rook edicts approximates to the grammatical Magadhi dialect except that dental sibilant is used in place of a Magadhi palatal sibilant.
